back to ukraine, into the dark

back to ukraine, into the dark

my second visit

lucy drops me at the airport and we share an equally heartfelt goodbye.

people have been asking how lucy feels about me heading to ukraine at war.
we dont discuss it too much.
but i know she understands i need to go and we are both realistic about what can happen.

i meet mark who founded world extreme medicine and advanced paramedic Luca #medics4ukraine and fly to east poland where SvL meets us and drives us across the border to Lviv.

SvL is from Kyiv
she worked in marketing before the war
for months now she has driven, unpaid, between ukraine and Poland, everyday, running essential supplies to friends, friends of friends and strangers, with a heavy sense of urgency.

it feels awkward to ask her 'how are you doing?' because she always answers 'ok' but she says it with a serious intenseness:
it's not fun times here: Ukraine's at war: people are dying everyday, fighting for their lives, for their freedom and their country.

we're staying at ST's apartment in Lviv, i'm so tired i'm grateful for half a sofa-bed, sleeping head to toe with mark.
