waking up in Lviv it’s easy to imagine you’re not in a country at war.

(which is a problem for Ukraine: keeping everyone engaged with what is going on in the east and south of the country)

Lviv is a really charming city full of charming people
it feels like parts of paris, or rome: has a very european vibe: cobbled streets, beautiful old architecture, outside dining.
the sun is shining

It’s usual population of 700k has almost doubled to 1.2m with mainly displaced Ukranians fleeing their homes and the Russian invaders (discussed here appropriately as ‘orcs’)

ST is from Kherson
he had to flee his home with his wife and 6yr old daughter and their cats: abandoning his business and house when the russians took over.

the russians now fully occupy Kherson

ST doesn’t know if he’ll ever return.

‘Fucking Russians’ is my often spoken Response to the call of what I’m told and what I see here.

Not all Russians, of course,

But all of those that came here (or stay here) creating hell and causing appalling horror

And those Russians who sent them

And those Russians who are happy being lied to.

I feel for the Russians who know what’s going on: who are against this and who can’t speak out about it and how brave those that DO speak out are!

WEM has a quick meeting about doing some training.

they’re not just delivering boxes of trauma medical supplies and other desperately needed medication
They are also delivering training on the latest frontline medical techniques and how to use the trauma medicine they deliver.

This is all being done at their own expense.
100% of money raised goes on medical supplies.

After the meeting we do the long haul to kyiv

Thankfully this time we take two cars.

ST’s car runs on LPG which we can still procure in Ukraine
N’s car runs on deisel.
There is no deisel in Ukraine.
So we’re carrying 5 or 6 large Jerry cans with us.

I feel a little like an incendiary bomb but am assured that deisel doesn’t go bang like petrol.

road signs were removed or covered to confuse the enemy

The drive is still an endurance run.
It’s the main road from lviv to kyiv but some parts are still a single lane in each direction: nowhere to overtake the slow moving trucks.

550 kms
And although the damage to the road caused by blowing up Russian tanks is being cleared, there are still potholes along the road, caused by extreme variations in climate.
-20 in the winter and +40in the summer.

Is 36 degrees in N’s car.
Does this make deisel any more combustible?

happy to be back in Kyiv

And happy to be sleeping in a hotel bed today.
