clearly, this is a sign

driving away from SF down the PCH (pacific coast highway) the very bendy, often single lane, more scenic of the two route 1's south towards LA, got stuck behind a campervan going s l o w

was unimpressed with the view-blocking nature of their big ass, until i saw the spare wheel cover

many years ago "i had a dream" where i was showing my portfolio to some particularly 'difficult' prospective clients when in desperation i protested, 'LOOK, I SHIT RAINBOWS!'

even in the dream, i was surprised by my outburst and choice of language: as far as i know id never heard the expression before or since

it's a slower drive south but the views make it SO worth while

the last time i did this route i was on my own and it was so misty off the sea and overcast, i couldn't see too much

this time we got lucky

monterey bay

i HATE zoos

but i like the London aquarium

and we all enjoyed the Monterey Bay aquarium

except for the very weird moment as you've been walking about and marvelling at the beautiful and interesting fish and sea creatures there, then encounter the on-site, large seafood restaurant.

stopped at the big Sur river inn for a moment and stopped for late lunch, cocktails and views at nepenthe

i was talking about the last time i drove this route when i stopped at the signs saying 'no stopping' to jump a barbed-wire fence to see what was on the beach, not knowing that i was very illegally (and stupidly) bothering elephant seals

when i spotted them again

this time we pulled into the carpark and used the designated viewing area to be close, but not too close, to these huge, smelly, magnificent, farting and lazily blubbering-about animals

we arrived here just as the sun was setting

looking past the seals, out to sea and the sunset, we could see the tops of kelp forests, there were birds flying past and birds all over the rocks in the distance

the view was full of bio-diversity and wonder: an incredible moment that no photos or film can capture like being there (sadly)

stayed for as long as we could handle the smell and awe then drove on a little way in the dark, to the madonna inn, my favourite hotel on the west coast
