lake district bumper pack day 3

lake district bumper pack day 3

the first (only?) sunny day this week in the lake district couldn't be wasted.

took the car ferry over windermere.

stopped at beatrix potter's old house adding another to the tiny village over-run with japanese tourists

then onto coniston old man for a high fell walk

MGM (mountain goat maximum) has almost entirely abandoned 'paths' in favour of constant off piste adventures, often to surprise an unsuspecting, out of the way sheep.

just before lunch, half way up the up, nanaco said she was done and wouldn't be able to continue.

coniston old man rose steeply ahead of us and it DID look unachievable.

but this is nanaco's 60th birthday memorial trip

and if you're going to have a heart attack anywhere THIS is the right place to do it, not on some steps in shinjuku

so we pushed on.

well i pushed nanaco on (not literally) and maximum inspired her with his running and skipping ahead

mind over matter.

nanaco wins!

here she is demonstrating her professional mountain climber stance on the way to the top.

RESPECT to nanaco.

i only feel slightly bad for being a hard task master.

"PEROU's don't quit"

it's a family motto you know

dow crag

dow crag

from the top, i really wanted to go along dow crag to get back

it's VERY imposing: an awesome bit of rock

i've walked it before...

<< previous     next >>

<< previous     next >>

...decided instead not to push it (or nanaco) further and took the short cut down past goat tarn instead

taking the short cut was a good idea

it was getting dark

and it was threatening to rain

the clouds came down hard totally obscuring the top of coniston old man and the entire dow crag.

a lucky swerve

made it back to the perou-mobile just as the thunder, lightning and heavy rain started.

we are knackered but victorious
